General Position Summary:  The Director of Liturgy and Music develops and directs choirs, cantors, musicians and liturgical ministers to provide leadership and direction in the planning and implementation of both English and Spanish liturgical events in a collaborative environment with the clergy, staff, volunteers and musicians. The Director is responsible for planning and executing parish liturgies and music in accord with Church Documents.
 
Principal Accountabilities:

• Administers a multifaceted liturgy and   music program including planning, budgeting, scheduling and timely communication with other liturgical ministers.
• Develops specific choirs or ensembles and cantors for weekend liturgies with the Associate Choir Director including a children’s choir that encourages youth participation.
• Oversees the Spanish Choir and supervises their music selections and presentation.
• Prepares worship aids for liturgical celebrations.
• Selects music for liturgical celebrations in accord with Church Documents.
• Coordinates audio/visual equipment and personnel.
• Oversees compliance with copyright laws and licensing procedures.
• Maintains choir library and liturgical/musical resources as needed.
• Ensures accuracy of information posted on the website concerning Liturgy and Music.
• Provides music for funerals.
• Approves non-parish musicians.
• Participates in staff meetings.
• Meets regularly with the Liturgy staff and volunteers and is available to provide training which may be needed.

• Recommends and selects all liturgical music settings
• Selects and approves volunteers
• Schedules staff and volunteers
• Creates and administers budget for department
• Makes hiring decisions for department along with Pastor

 
Supervision Given and/or Received:

• Supervises Associate Choir Director and Associate Liturgy Director.
• Supervises choirs, cantors and musicians.
• Reports to the Pastor

 
Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:

• This position works in a typical office environment, but is subject to stress due to the evolving and quickly expanding business needs, tight deadlines and heavy workloads of a large parish.
• Evenings and weekend work required.
• Frequent walking, standing and sitting.  Ability to lift up to 40 pounds without assistance.
• Frequent use of musical instruments and computer keyboards requiring repetitive hand and wrist movements.

 
Travel Requirements:

• Less than 5%

 
Education and Experience Preferred:

• Advanced degree in Liturgy/Music
• 6+ years of experience in a large parish setting.
• Thorough understanding of GIRM, rubrics of the Roman Missal, and current official Church Documents on the Liturgy.

 
Knowledge and Skills Preferred:

• Must be able to play piano and organ with a high degree of skill.
• Must have choral director experience including the ability to direct from the bench.
