ANY CHILD, TEEN OR ADULT WHO HAS NOT MADE
THEIR FIRST HOLY COMMUNION MAY PREPARE
TO RECEIVE THE BLESSED SACRAMENT.
The Elementary Office of Evangelization and Catechesis is now offering two sessions of the Sacrament Preparation program per year for parents who would like to prepare their children for Reconciliation and the Eucharist. In addition to the Fall through Spring session, there is a Spring through Summer session. The next registration will be for the Fall through Spring 2017/2018 session and will open this coming June. Watch this page for the link to register your 7 year old.
Our program has undergone some changes. While it has always required the active participation of the parents as the primary formators of their children in the Faith, we have increased that emphasis and involvement by offering a series of classes on the Eucharist for the parents called the Bread of Life course (see link above). It consists of 4 two hour Saturday classes spread out over a period of 4 months The time spent in class replaces the time formerly spent attending retreats with your child.
This wonderful study of the Eucharist is aimed at increasing our own adult understanding of and love for Our Lord in the Eucharist, so that we may then bring that knowledge and fervor home to our children in order to teach them all the better to treasure this Greatest Gift. In addition, it provides fellowship with other parents in the parish who are also preparing their children.
In addition to the Bread of Life course, we will provide you with books to use with your child at home to prepare him for each of the sacraments.
As the primary educator of your child, it will be up to you to determine when your child is ready to be brought in for an assessment of his or her readiness to receive First Communion. It is suggested that, when the Bread of Life course has concluded, and you and your child have read and studied the books you received at the parent meeting, you come on a scheduled assessment day, or you may call the office of Elementary Evangelization and Catechesis after those dates to schedule an appointment. The Bread of Life course provides a comprehensive preparation for this assessment, even giving you questions to bring home and discuss with your child, and helping you relate what you are learning to the books you are using with your child at home.
After your child has passed this oral assessment/interview, you may schedule a date for First Communion through our office that best suits your family.
